It may seem odd in an era of polish and style, but Broken was always intended to be a misshapen, woolly mess of a movie. All knew going in, what we lacked in funds could be compensated for in creativity–conventional beauty be damned! What emerged as an enlightening jolt of reality was the degree of patience and fortitude the production demanded.
Lost jobs, lost girlfriends, new apartments, broken-down cars; they all became obstacles in a Byzantine passage toward completion of the movie, causing the actual production of the film to encompass over six years of the filmmakers' lives. Jokes about the aptness of the title, once mildly clever, rapidly wore thin as the campaign rattled and lurched forward to a final completion. And the film wears those years of production like mysterious bruises from a half-remembered night of hard partying. Of course, that's how it was intended all along.
